Whether you are starting an aeroponics, aquaponics, or hydroponics system, you probably wonder how much produce you can produce from a given system size, or maybe you are about to build a new diy system and want to know how big you need to build the system to grow a given amount of plants each month. I have created a calculator for just that right here on this page!
However, the calculator can only predict theoretical performance. Your results will vary depending on nutrient and light availability and the plant species you are growing. But this should at least give you a rough estimate.
Planning a new system: How many plants are needed to reach your harvesting goal?
With this calculator, you can determine how many “plants holes”(places for plants or just plants) you need space for in your system to reach your harvesting goal. You need to know how many days a plant needs to grow from seedling to harvest time in your system. This does not include places for seeds -> seedling, only seedling -> harvest.
This calculator is best used with heads of lettuce or similar plants that goes from seedling to full-head harvest. For example, butterhead lettuce needs 45-60 days to maturity from seedling. I would use 60 days here if you are unsure. This will require more plant holes, but at least you’re not underestimating your needs when planning out your new system, and it gives a nice overview.
How much can my system produce?
This calculator is for when you have a preset amount of plant holes(places for plants) available, let us say you are looking at a product that have 30 holes, how much can it produce? Like the calculator above it’s best used for seedlings to full-head harvest like butterhead lettuce or similar.
You still need to know how many days the plant needs to mature from seedling to harvest in your system and how often you want to harvest from your system.
Do you have a suggestion for another useful calculator or tool?
Suggestions for another calculator or tool are welcome and appreciated. Leave your suggestions below in the comments. I’ll mention your name(and website) on it and give you a heads-up when it’s added here or on another dedicated site 🙂
